Baptism above all else marks our new identity in Christ. How is it that Scripture puts it? Once we were no people, but now, now we are God’s people. Baptism marks each person as a member of the body of Christ. In it, the faith community echoes God’s welcome by promising to support the newly baptized person in his or her spiritual journey. It is truly a new starts given to us by God. For just as the baptism marked the beginning of Jesus public ministry (Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, John 3:21-22). The Gospel of John gives witness to the work of the Holy Spirit in Jesus in these words: “I baptize you with water, but there is one who is more powerful than I… He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit,… Baptism continues as this representation of the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit in our lives today. Jesus entrusted the ministry of baptism to his followers. At Pentecost, the promised baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire gave birth to the church then and now. It is a gift to you here and now. The promise of baptism is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him. And that’s why you are really here, isn’t it? You are called by God into the promise of God.
